2011 Events

Pelhams, Kinson, Bournemouth Oct 2011

Local and regional charities, community and voluntary groups, ethical/environmental traders, businesses and Transition BH Hub  once again teamed up for a free event, The Green Community Fair, held at Pelhams in Kinson on Saturday 29th October.

The date was set so that the The Green Community Fair will be included in the list of activities available to families during the October half term. Some families spent hours crafting stone carvings, there were ferrets and chickens to meet and the recycled arts ‘bottle rocket workshop’ went off with a blast.

In keeping with the environmental theme, there was a cycle powered music stage.

The Training and Learning Company, a volunteer based community interest initiative provided fair trade hot drinks and locally sourced organic food. And the addition of a new Vegetarian Caterer Timbuktu Coffee Caravan was happily situated in the animal campaigns stalls area.

Many stalls had a roaring trade at the special Ethical and Environmental Market and people were pampered and treated at the natural, holistic and healing therapies area.

Trading pitches and healing/therapy opportunities are currently available  for future events. Here’s what one of the stall holders said about a previous event.

“Great day today! My stall had loads of visitors and good sales. The day had a lovely vibe about it. Well done to those involved.”

The Green Community Fairs are being organised for the Community in conjunction with the Transition BH Hub who are groups of people living in Poole, Bournemouth, Wimborne, Christchurch and surrounding areas starting Transition Towns initiatives for the benefit of the community and for the environment.

Under Transition Towns, these projects are united with the aim to start to prepare and raise awareness of the inevitable transition to a low energy future resulting from the effects on the environment and community of reaching peak oil and increasing carbon emissions.

The aim of the Green Community Fair is to bring together people in the community with the Transition and Community projects alongside likeminded local voluntary groups, charities, businesses and business people.

All events are planned to be free to the public and the Kinson event was supported by Total Sel solar power installer, the Kinson Traders Association, Eco Floor CarePelhams Leisure CentreLINks,Bournemouth Council Home Building Maintenance Solar Energy Team, the Bournemouth Partnership Healthy Homes,  and The Green Knowledge Network sub group of the Bournemouth Chamber of Commerce.

There are also opportunities for individuals to get involved as volunteers – help is needed during the run up to the events, on the day, and also with the break down. Volunteers receive training, free meals and expenses where possible with additional opportunities available at other green events and festivals around the country throughout the year.

There are lots of ways people can help and plenty of opportunities to develop event production skills that could lead on to employment or further education.
